Steven Cox
Steven Cox is a Scottish abstract painter based in Edinburgh whose work explores materiality, mark-making and colour. His distinctive process involves transferring thick layers of oil paint onto canvas, building surfaces through pressure and accumulation. Drawing inspiration from the built environment — from peeling paint and damaged walls to weathered surfaces — his paintings can be experienced both as immediate fields of colour and, at closer range, as richly detailed, tactile surfaces.
An internationally exhibited artist, Cox has presented solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, Naples and Copenhagen, and his work is held in collections including UBS Bank Art Collection and Rathbone Investment Management. His recent exhibitions include Panorama at Halsey McKay Gallery, New York, in 2026.
