Kind King: 6‘ x 6‘ acrylic painting by Russell Hurlburt, currently at the Linkong Modern Museum of Art Beijing, China (center),
Russell Hurlburt
My paintings are a result of my meditation, healing and spirit-driven reflections. Turning my inside out. Above all, creating lets me abandon myself to the process of allowing emotions to flow, connecting me to the world, and the world to my work. I paint from my journey. I am an artist, and that’s who I am.

About Russell Hurlburt
Russell Hurlburt is a self-taught artist from a very young age. He was painting and making greeting cards to sell door-to-door out of his little red wagon. By the age of nine, he was introduced to hairstyling and cutting hair into shapes. By the age of 17, he was an art major, heading out of high school to pursue a career in elementary education, where he would teach art.
The decision was very difficult in the final hours, but he took the direction of becoming a very successful hairstylist with a career spanning over 46 years. Russell was a multiple salon owner, a platform educator for a major hair company, and his work was recognised by several trade magazines over the span of his career.
At the threshold of his retirement, he picked up his paintbrushes and began to express his life experiences on canvas. He began to find his story pouring out in colour and shapes onto the canvas. It was very freeing for his soul. Expressing his joys, his grief, and his celebrations of living, his joy of colour all began to show up in his vivid paintings. Russell found that turning himself inside out was the only expression of his journey that he could find himself, as it led him into his future.
