Chris Horner

Chris Horner is a British contemporary artist based between Alton, Hampshire, and London. Working at the intersection of painting, sculpture and process-based abstraction, he transforms reclaimed building materials into richly textured works that explore memory, labour and materiality. Drawing on his experience in the building trade, Horner creates poetic compositions that blur the boundaries between construction and fine art, using cement, plaster, sand and industrial materials alongside traditional paint. His work has been exhibited extensively across the UK and internationally, and he is a member of the prestigious London Group, having received the JPES Partnership Prize in 2019 before being elected to membership in 2020.

About Chris Horner

Chris Horner's practice is rooted in process, experimentation and transformation. Inspired by the materials and methods of the construction industry, he repurposes reclaimed building materials into abstract works that celebrate both their physical qualities and their history. Moving intuitively between the disciplined precision of a builder and the spontaneity of an artist, Horner creates layered surfaces that invite close inspection. His work explores themes of labour, chance, memory and the relationship between everyday materials and contemporary art, resulting in compositions that are both tactile and conceptually engaging.

A graduate of the University for the Creative Arts, where he completed both a BA and an MA in Fine Art, Horner has built a strong exhibition record that includes solo and group exhibitions at venues such as The Shard, the National Army Museum, Bankside Gallery, Copeland Gallery and the Royal Marsden Hospital. His achievements include winning the JPES Partnership Prize at The London Group Open Exhibition in 2019, election to The London Group in 2020, selection for the Peirson & Peirson Contemporary Art Prize in 2026, and invitations to deliver artist talks and curate exhibitions. Alongside his studio practice, he teaches art and remains actively involved in the building trade, a unique combination that continues to inform the evolution of his work.
